Tony Thiry is a very productive woodworker who about a year ago discovered working with wood again. He had been designing on paper however he felt the lessons learned in wood shop left him many years ago. It was difficult for him to visualize his projects with the drafting method he was using. |
"I began searching the internet for a design program. I quickly found a number of CAD programs but I found the learning curve rather steep. I wasn’t interested in taking weeks or months to learn how to use them so I kept searching.
I eventually ran across SketchList 3D. I watched the brief training videos and it looked like the type of program I was looking for. I contacted SketchList and downloaded a demo of the application. Within 2 hours of downloading the software I had it installed and designed a patio coffee table. Granted it was a simple design but I never had that much accomplished in the same amount of time with the CAD programs.
I have had the software for 2 months and I am on my fourth project. I am currently working on a desk and side table which is a little more ambitious than what I have tried to date. SketchList 3D has helped me in a number of ways.
The biggest advantage for me is to be able to see the piece in 3D to get a spatial perspective, rather than trying to visualize the project on paper. 3D has allowed me to identify mistakes or change the esthetics of the piece in SketchList 3D rather than finding mistakes during construction and being forced to making last minute changes.
SketchList 3D helps me understand construction theory more easily as well. As I stated earlier, it has been a while since I have constructed wood working projects. SketchList 3D has helped me identify where I might need more support as well as determine the type of joinery I should use for the strongest joint.
Finally, I can’t say enough about the Cutting Layouts function. I would have spent hours trying to determine the best way to layout my project on sheet material to get the least amount of waste. SketchList 3D did this for me in a mater of seconds saving me time and money in materials."
